Playground Border Ideas: Layouts, Heights and ADA Ramps

The short version

Five playground border layouts using Funtimber recycled-plastic lumber, with heights, ADA ramps, end kits and real prices.

A playground border does one job: it holds your surfacing in place. Without one, wood fiber and mulch migrate onto the lawn, rubber and sand wash into the drains, and the fall zone under your equipment thins out. A border is also the line that tells people where the play area starts. Play Grove sells the Funtimber border system, made from recycled-plastic lumber, in two heights with ADA ramps, end kits and fillers. These are the border layouts that work best, with real prices on every part. Browse the full playground borders collection as you read.

Idea 1: The clean perimeter

The simplest design is one continuous border around the whole surfacing area, same height all the way. Measure the perimeter, check the piece length on the spec sheet for the timber you choose, and divide. Every 10 timbers cost $350 in the 9 inch height or $370 in the 12 inch height. This layout suits small daycare yards and church play areas, and it keeps cost and install time down. See daycare playground equipment for how those buyers purchase.

Idea 2: Match the border height to the surfacing depth

Taller borders hold more loose-fill surfacing. The 12 inch timber gives you more room for a deep layer of engineered wood fiber, and the 9 inch timber works where the layer is shallower. Your equipment's fall height decides the depth you need, and Play Grove confirms fall height before an order ships. The engineered wood fiber guide covers depth and the surfacing options compared guide covers loose-fill against rubber and turf.

Idea 3: Build in an accessible entry

A raised border with no break can block wheelchairs and walkers. Add a transition ramp at the entry. The flush mount ADA ramp ($570) works with existing 8, 9 and 12 inch borders, which makes it a good retrofit for a playground you already have. The full ADA ramps ($885.40) come in an 8 and 9 inch version and a 12 inch version, so match the ramp to the height of your timber. Plan an accessible route that leads to the ramp, and read ADA playground requirements for route and surfacing basics.

Idea 4: Zone the site with separate borders

If you have a toddler area and a school-age area, give each its own border. Separate borders keep the surfacing in the right place, mark the edge of each age group and let you use a different height or depth for each. This works well in parks and schools with more than one structure. Pair it with the how to plan a playground layout guide so the borders follow the use zones you measured. Municipal buyers can start at park playground equipment.

Idea 5: Border a game or fitness zone

A border works for more than climbers and slides. Any zone with loose-fill surfacing needs an edge, including the floor around a GaGa ball pit or a fitness circuit. A border keeps wood fiber or mulch in place and keeps those zones tidy next to the lawn.

Ends and fillers

A border run needs finished ends. The adjustable end kits ($158.34) are made for the 9 and 12 inch timbers, and the fillers ($183.66 for a box of 6) come in matching heights. Because the pieces are specific to height, tell us your perimeter and we will help you work out the quantities. For purchase orders, the request a quote page gets you one firm proposal with freight, surfacing and installation included.

Frequently asked questions

What is Funtimber made from?

Recycled-plastic lumber, built for ground contact and playground use rather than treated wood. The product pages say it holds up to ground contact and UV exposure better than untreated wood.

Which surfacing types work with these borders?

Engineered wood fiber, rubber mulch, poured-in-place and turf. The border does not lock you into one surfacing type.

How are the borders installed?

They stake or spike into the ground along the edge of the surfacing area. The timbers come with a snap-in spike. Ask us for the install guide for your run length.

How do I clean and maintain a border?

Sweep surfacing back inside the border, check that spikes are seated and that no piece has shifted, and look for gaps at ends and joints. Add it to your regular checks with the playground inspection and maintenance guide.

Is a playground border ADA accessible?

A border alone can block access, so add a transition ramp at the entry. Play Grove sells a flush mount ramp for 8, 9 and 12 inch borders and full ramps for each height.

How many pieces do I need?

It depends on the perimeter of your surfacing area and the length of each border piece. Send us the dimensions and we will help you work out the quantity.

What sizes and configurations are available?

Timbers come in 9 and 12 inch heights, with matching end kits, fillers and ramps. All are in the playground borders collection.
