How to plan a playground layout before you buy anything
Measure the use zone, not the structure. Work out peak capacity, not enrolment. The planning sequence that stops a project being redesigned after the money is committed.
Most playground projects are planned backwards. Someone falls in love with a structure in a brochure, then discovers it does not fit, does not suit the age group, or does not leave room for an accessible route. Here is the order that avoids all of that, and it takes an afternoon.
Step one: measure the real space
Not the field. The area you can genuinely give over to play, in feet, length by width. Then subtract:
- Anything within six feet of a fence, wall, path or planting bed, because use zones cannot overlap them
- Anything on a slope steeper than roughly one in twenty, because it will need grading
- Anything over a drainage run, a service or a mature tree root plate
- The route a delivery truck and a small excavator need to get in
What is left is your buildable area. It is usually smaller than people expect, and knowing it before you shop saves an entire round of redesign.
Step two: understand the use zone
This is the single most important concept in playground planning and the one most often missed.
Every structure has a footprint, which is how much ground the equipment occupies, and a safety use zone, which is the area around it that must stay clear and surfaced. The use zone typically extends six feet beyond the equipment in all directions. For swings it is much larger: front and back, the zone extends to roughly twice the height of the pivot bar.
A structure with a thirty one by nineteen foot footprint can carry a forty five by thirty three foot use zone. That is nearly two and a half times the area. If you plan against the footprint you will be short of space and short of surfacing budget.
Use zones can never overlap a fence, a path, a wall or a planting bed. Two structures can sometimes share zone space between them, and sometimes cannot, depending on their heights. That is a question for your supplier, in writing.

Step three: work out peak simultaneous capacity
Not your enrolment. How many children will be on the structure at the same time, at the busiest moment.
A school with four hundred pupils that sends out one class of twenty five at a time needs a very different structure from a school that releases two hundred at recess. Manufacturers price on capacity, so specifying for your whole roll instead of your peak wastes serious money.
Count the actual peak. Add a margin. That is your capacity target.
Step four: settle the age ranges
Equipment is designed and certified for six to twenty three months, two to five years, or five to twelve years. These are not marketing bands, they drive component heights, guardrails, deck heights and fall heights.
If you serve two age groups you need two areas with two use zones, separated and signed, not one bigger structure. Budget for that from the start. Mixing them is a safety finding waiting to happen and it will be flagged in any inspection.
Step five: place the accessible route first
Draw the route from the nearest accessible parking space, path or building entrance to where the equipment will sit, before you place the equipment. It has to be firm, stable, slip resistant, and free of steps, kerbs and lips the whole way.
Doing this first frequently changes where the structure goes, and it is essentially free at this stage. Retrofitting a route after installation is expensive and sometimes impossible.
Step six: think about the things nobody draws
- Sun. Which way does the site face and what is unshaded at two in the afternoon in July? Dark surfacing and metal slides in full southern sun get genuinely too hot to use.
- Sight lines. Can a supervising adult see the whole structure from one position? Enclosed tunnels and solid panels create blind spots.
- Seating. Adults will stand somewhere. Decide where, or they will stand inside the use zone.
- Drainage. Where does water go? A use zone that holds water destroys loose fill surfacing and shortens the life of everything.
- Winter. Where does snow get pushed? Not onto the surfacing, ideally.
Step seven: sequence the money
Equipment is only half to two thirds of the project. Before committing, have a number for surfacing across the whole use zone plus the route, certified installation, freight to your actual ZIP code, any demolition or grading, and a ten percent contingency.
If the total does not fit, phase it deliberately rather than shrinking everything. A well chosen structure extends, so buying the core system now and adding shade, amenities and the second age group next year is almost always better than buying a smaller structure you outgrow.
What to have in hand before you request quotes
- Buildable area, length by width in feet
- Age ranges to be served
- Peak simultaneous capacity
- ZIP code for freight
- Where the accessible route comes from
- Known site conditions: slopes, drainage, demolition, access
- Total budget and how you intend to pay
A supplier given those seven things can produce a firm all-in price. A supplier given "we want a new playground" produces a brochure and a phone call.
