Engineered wood fiber: what it is and how not to get caught out
Engineered wood fiber is the most used playground surface in America and the most misunderstood. What it is, what it costs, how deep it has to be, and why most installations fail compliance within four years.
Engineered wood fiber, usually shortened to EWF, is the most common playground safety surface in the United States. It is also the one most frequently installed wrongly, maintained badly and assumed to be compliant when it is not. If you are specifying it or you already own it, this is what matters.
What it actually is
Not bark mulch. Not landscape chips. Engineered wood fiber is virgin wood processed into fibrous strands of a controlled size and shape, which knit together under foot traffic to form a surface that is firm enough to roll a wheelchair across but loose enough to absorb a fall.
That knitting property is the whole point, and it is why the cheap alternative is not a substitute. Landscape mulch is chunky, it does not knit, it decomposes faster, and it can contain treated or dyed material you do not want children falling into. If a quote says mulch rather than engineered wood fiber tested to ASTM F1292 and ASTM F2075, ask which one you are actually buying.
What it costs
- Material delivered in bulk, roughly $30 to $55 per cubic yard depending on haul distance
- Installed including base and drainage, roughly $4 to $8 per square foot
- Topping up to depth, roughly $1,500 to $6,000 for a typical school playground every three to five years
It is the cheapest compliant surface to install by a wide margin. Its true cost is in maintenance, and that cost is a labour cost, which is why it suits organisations with grounds staff and punishes those without.
How much you need
Depth is determined by the critical fall height of your tallest accessible platform. As a working guide for EWF:

Note the word compacted. You install deeper than the target because it settles, typically by around twenty five percent in the first year. Installing exactly twelve inches on day one means you are below twelve inches by the following summer.
To calculate volume, take the safety use zone area in square feet, multiply by the depth in feet, and divide by twenty seven for cubic yards. A forty five by thirty three foot use zone at twelve inches is 1,485 square feet, which is fifty five cubic yards, and you should order closer to seventy to allow for settlement.
Price the use zone, not the footprint of the structure. This is the single most expensive mistake in playground budgeting.
Why most installations fail within four years
Three reasons, all avoidable.
Migration
It moves. Under swings and at slide exits it moves fast, because that is where feet land hardest and most often. Those are also precisely the points with the highest fall height. Within two seasons you can have twelve inches across the use zone and four inches at the swing landing.
Compaction
It settles and consolidates under traffic. Nobody notices because it happens evenly and slowly, and the surface still looks like a playground surface. It just no longer absorbs a fall from the height it was specified for.
Nobody measures
Depth is invisible from standing height. Unless somebody physically pushes a ruler into it at multiple points, an out of compliance playground looks identical to a compliant one.
What good maintenance looks like
- Measure depth quarterly at a minimum of four points inside the use zone, always including under each swing and at the base of every slide.
- Rake the high traffic points monthly in season. Ten minutes redistributing material from the edges back to the landing zones is worth more than an annual top up.
- Top up every three to five years and budget for it as a recurring line rather than a surprise.
- Keep the containment intact. A failed border edge is how a use zone quietly loses several inches across the whole area.
- Check drainage after heavy rain. Standing water accelerates decomposition and turns the surface into something that neither drains nor attenuates.
- Record it. Dated depth measurements are the document you want if the surface is ever questioned.
Where EWF is the wrong choice
- No grounds staff and no maintenance budget. It will go out of compliance and nobody will notice.
- Poor drainage that cannot be fixed. It will rot and pack down.
- An accessible route that has to be reliably firm every day of the year. Use poured rubber or tiles for the route and EWF for the rest of the zone.
- Very heavy continuous use, such as a large municipal park with all day traffic, where the migration rate outpaces realistic maintenance.
The honest summary
Engineered wood fiber is an excellent surface that behaves like a maintenance commitment rather than a purchase. Bought with clear eyes and a rake, it is the best value in playground surfacing. Bought because it was the cheapest line on the quote, it becomes a compliance liability on a three to four year timer.
