Commercial Playground Equipment in Massachusetts

We supply and install commercial playground equipment across Massachusetts, from Boston and the Metrowest suburbs out to Worcester, Springfield, the South Coast and the Cape. Published pricing, complete specifications and ungated CAD on every product, with one firm all-in proposal covering equipment, freight, surfacing and installation back inside 24 hours.

Everything we supply is ASTM F1487 compliant, and every quote prices footings to the frost depth your building department actually enforces.

What is different about building here

Frost depth

Massachusetts footings have to sit below the frost line, commonly 42 to 48 inches depending on jurisdiction, and local code governs. Structures set on shallow footings heave, and the damage shows up in the second or third winter as posts out of plumb and stressed deck connections. This is the corner most commonly cut on donated-labor installs and by out-of-region crews.

Coastal and salt exposure

Sites on the South Shore, South Coast and Cape get salt air year round, and sites near any plowed lot or sidewalk get road salt all winter. Powder coated steel and thermoplastic coated decks are specified for it. Swing hangers and exposed hardware are what suffer, and an annual rinse and lubricate is worth doing on any site within a few miles of the water or beside a salted lot.

Ledge

Plenty of Massachusetts sites hit ledge at footing depth, particularly north and west of Boston. It is not a problem, it is a cost, and it is a cost that should be identified before the crew arrives rather than as a change order on day one. If you know or suspect ledge, tell us and we will price it in.

The install window

Ground work runs roughly April through November. School projects compress into the ten weeks between the last day of school and the first day back, and every district in the Commonwealth is chasing the same weeks with the same installers. With 6 to 10 week manufacturing lead times plus freight, a September opening needs a purchase order issued by early June.

Who we work with in Massachusetts

Licensed childcare has its own rules

Massachusetts childcare licensing sets outdoor space, fencing, shade and supervision requirements on top of the ASTM standards, and the outdoor area is checked at licensing and at renewal. The failures are rarely the equipment. They are surfacing depth, use zone encroachment, missing shade and age-inappropriate equipment in a preschool yard. Send us your licensing requirements along with the yard dimensions and we will specify to them rather than to a generic layout. See ages 2 to 5 and ages 6 to 23 months.

Buying without a bid process

Massachusetts districts and municipalities can generally purchase through a national cooperative contract, which satisfies competitive procurement requirements without running a solicitation and typically removes six to twelve weeks from the schedule. That is usually what makes a summer window achievable. We quote against Sourcewell, OMNIA Partners, BuyBoard and TIPS. Confirm which routes your procurement office accepts, then see cooperative purchasing and purchase orders.

Tax exempt entities can purchase without sales tax on file, see tax exemption.

What a Massachusetts project costs

Equipment prices are published on every product page. The regional variable is installation, because frost-depth footings, drainage and occasional ledge work cost more here than in a warm dry climate. Expect installed cost to land roughly 60 to 100 percent above equipment cost once freight, surfacing, site prep and installation are in, toward the upper end on wet, sloped or ledge sites.

Browse by band: under $25k, $25k to $50k, $50k to $100k, over $100k. The full breakdown is in the cost guide.

Funding

Massachusetts schools and municipalities fund a meaningful share of playground projects through grants, community preservation funds, capital reserve and PTO fundraising. Applications are more winnable than most people assume because so few organizations file them. See the grants guide.

What to send us

Site dimensions or a plan, age ranges served, peak headcount, a budget number, your target install window, and a note if you know the site has ledge, drainage problems or an existing structure to remove. That is enough for a firm all-in proposal within 24 hours. Request a quote.

Massachusetts playground questions, answered properly

How deep do footings need to be in Massachusetts?

Below the local frost line, commonly 42 to 48 inches, with local code governing. We price footings to the requirement in your jurisdiction rather than to a national default.

When can you install?

Ground work runs roughly April through November. Concrete footings and poured-in-place surfacing have temperature limits, so late-season projects are scheduled around the forecast. June through August is the busiest stretch and books out first.

Do we have to go out to bid?

Usually not. Most districts and municipalities can buy through a cooperative contract and satisfy competitive procurement that way. Confirm with your procurement office which cooperatives they accept, then we quote against it.

Will the equipment hold up to coastal salt air?

Yes, with the right specification. Powder coated steel and thermoplastic coated components are rated for it. On coastal sites we recommend an annual rinse of exposed hardware and swing hangers, which takes a maintenance crew under an hour.

What surfacing works best here?

All standard options work if the base drains. Poured-in-place handles freeze-thaw well over a correct base and stays ADA compliant without ongoing work. Engineered wood fiber is cheaper but needs topping up after spring melt. See surfacing and the comparison guide.

Can you remove our old structure?

Yes. Demolition, haul-away and disposal can be included. Older structures may contain CCA-treated timber, which has specific disposal requirements, so tell us the approximate age and material.

What does accessibility require on a Massachusetts site?

An accessible route into and through the play area, the required counts of accessible ground level and elevated play components, and firm stable surfacing on the route. See inclusive play and the ADA requirements guide. Send us a layout and we will run the counts before you order.

How far ahead should a Massachusetts district start?

February or March for a summer install, with the purchase order issued by early June. For a spring opening, order the previous fall.
