How much does a commercial playground cost?
Real numbers rather than a range, the split between equipment and everything else, three worked budgets, and the seven costs that get discovered after the money is committed.
Most sites in this industry answer this question with "it depends" and a contact form. It does depend, but not so much that we cannot give you numbers you can take to a meeting. Here is what a commercial playground actually costs, what drives the number, and where projects go over.
The short answer
For a typical outdoor commercial playground on a flat, prepared site, all in and including surfacing and installation:

These are planning figures. They exist so you can walk into a meeting with a defensible number instead of a guess, and so you know immediately whether a supplier's quote is in the right universe.
The rule that matters more than the number
Equipment is usually between half and two thirds of what a playground costs to put in the ground.
This single fact causes more budget failures than anything else in the category. Someone gets an equipment quote for eighty thousand dollars, presents eighty thousand dollars to a board, and then discovers surfacing, freight and installation. Now the project is either short by forty thousand or it gets value-engineered into something nobody wanted.
The working split:
- Equipment, 50 to 65 percent. Structures, swings, inclusive components, site amenities.
- Safety surfacing, 15 to 25 percent. Driven by your critical fall height and the area of the use zone, not by the size of the structure.
- Certified installation, 15 to 25 percent. Footings, assembly and the labour to do it correctly.
- Freight, 5 to 10 percent. Real money on a large system and it varies by hundreds of dollars depending on the delivery address.
- Site preparation, 0 to 20 percent. Nothing on flat, clear, accessible ground. Substantial with demolition, grading, drainage or a retaining edge.
- Contingency, 10 percent. Not optional.
What actually drives the equipment price
Capacity, not size
Manufacturers price around how many children a structure serves at once. A system for forty six children costs roughly twice one for twenty three, regardless of how tall it looks in the render. Work out your peak simultaneous use first, because specifying for your whole enrolment when only one class goes out at a time wastes money.
Deck height
Higher decks mean more structural steel, more guardrails and a higher critical fall height, which pushes your surfacing cost up as well. Height is the most expensive thing you can add and often the least useful.
Age range
Serving two to five and five to twelve on one site means two separate structures with separate use zones, not one bigger structure. Budget accordingly, and note that combining them is a compliance problem as well as a cost one.
Inclusive components
Ramps in particular. A fully ramped structure costs meaningfully more than one with a transfer station, because ramps are long, structural and take up a great deal of footprint. They are also the difference between technically compliant and genuinely usable, and they open up funding that standard equipment does not qualify for.
Material
Powder-coated steel and commercial-grade HDPE cost more up front than lighter alternatives and last considerably longer in freeze-thaw climates. Over a twenty year life the cheaper product is usually the more expensive one.
The seven costs people forget
- Removing what is already there. Old equipment, old surfacing and disposal. Old surfacing in particular can be a nasty surprise.
- The accessible route. An accessible surface has to reach the equipment from an accessible path. Budgeting for surfacing under the structure but not for the route to it is the single most common miss we see.
- Border and drainage. Loose fill needs containment and somewhere for water to go. Poured surfacing needs a proper base.
- Shade. Rarely in the first budget, almost always wanted by year two, and much cheaper installed at the same time as everything else.
- Site amenities. Benches, tables, bins, a bike rack. Small individually, several thousand dollars together.
- Inspection and maintenance. An annual inspection and a parts budget. Loose fill needs topping up, and surfacing that has compacted below depth is a compliance problem as well as a safety one.
- Signage. Required in most jurisdictions, cheap, and invisible until someone asks for it.
Where the savings actually are
Not in buying cheaper equipment. The real savings are structural.
- Phase it. Buy the structure now, add shade, amenities and the second age group next year. A well chosen system extends rather than needing replacing.
- Choose surfacing deliberately. Engineered wood fibre is far cheaper to install than poured rubber and considerably more expensive to maintain. Which one wins depends entirely on whether you have maintenance staff.
- Buy off a cooperative contract. It costs nothing to use, satisfies competitive procurement requirements, and removes three to six months from the timeline. Months are money.
- Install outside peak season. Installer availability is worst in late spring. Ask what a September install saves.
