Preschool Playground Equipment

Preschool playground equipment is its own category under ASTM F1487, not a shrunk down version of the big structure. Lower decks, shorter climbs, narrower steps, handholds sized for small hands, and enclosed or barrier protected platforms where a five to twelve structure would use a guardrail. Everything on this page is about the two to five rating and what it changes for your budget, your yard and your inspection.

What changes at the two to five rating

Putting preschoolers on five to twelve equipment is the most common specification error on daycare, church and elementary sites. It is an inspection finding, it is a predictable injury pattern, and it is entirely avoidable by filtering to the right age rating before you start shopping.

  • Maximum deck heights are lower, which cuts the required surfacing depth and the cost with it
  • Platforms above twenty inches need full barriers rather than guardrails
  • Step risers and rung spacing are sized for shorter legs and shorter reach
  • Slides are shorter, with a gentler pitch and a longer run out
  • Climbers favor ramps, stairs and low arches over vertical nets and fire poles
  • Activity panels and ground level play carry more of the play value than height does

Play value at this age comes from the ground, not the height

Two to five year olds get more out of sensory panels, playhouses, low tunnels, steering wheels, and sand and water tables than they do out of deck height. That is useful, because deck height is the single biggest cost driver in the whole project. A structure with a three foot maximum deck needs materially less surfacing depth than one with a six foot deck, and a four year old will use the three foot structure more.

Spread the components around the area rather than stacking them vertically. Parallel play is how this age group actually plays, so six small activities used at once beats one tall tower with a queue at the bottom of it.

What goes in a preschool play zone

  • A compact composite system rated two to five
  • Ground level climbers, tunnels and activity panels
  • A swing bay with bucket seats, which need a much larger use zone than they look like they do
  • Short slides matched to the deck height you have chosen
  • Inclusive ground level components, which are easier to deliver at this age rating than at any other
  • Surfacing rated to the installed fall height across the whole use zone
  • Shade if the yard has no tree canopy, since deck and slide surface temperatures climb fast in afternoon sun

If you are also serving infants and young toddlers, see six to twenty three months. If you are serving elementary ages on the same site, plan a separate five to twelve zone rather than one compromise structure that serves neither group properly.

Use zones are bigger than they look

A small structure still needs six feet of clear use zone on every side, and swings need a zone extending twice the pivot height both in front and behind. On a tight preschool yard the swing bay is usually the thing that does not fit. Measure the usable area, subtract the fence setbacks, then place the swing first, because everything else is easier to move around it.

Surfacing for a preschool yard

Poured in place rubber is the easiest to keep at rated depth, the easiest to clean, and it does not get picked up and thrown, which matters more at this age than at any other. Engineered wood fiber is cheaper up front and works when it is maintained, but it needs raking and topping up and it does get carried indoors on shoes. On a small yard the price gap between the two is narrower than people expect. The surfacing comparison guide has the installed cost and lifespan numbers.

Accessibility is easier at this age rating

You need an accessible route into and through the play area, firm and stable surfacing, and the required count of accessible ground level play types. Because so much of the play value at two to five is already at ground level, hitting the counts is far less expensive here than on a five to twelve structure with elevated components to reach. See inclusive play and the ADA requirements guide for the counts.

What preschool playground equipment costs

Preschool zones are the most affordable part of most playground projects, usually eight to thirty thousand dollars installed depending on how much of the yard needs surfacing. Browse under twenty five thousand and read the cost guide for the surfacing and installation side, which is where nearly all the variation between quotes comes from.

Lead times, and the date that actually matters

Six to ten weeks to manufacture and ship, then a few days on site for a zone this size. If you are opening a room, expanding licensed capacity or working to an inspection date, start the order at least three months ahead. Items in ready to ship are considerably faster when the date is already fixed and cannot move.

What to send us

The usable yard dimensions in feet, the ages in each room, whether you are licensed and by which state, your rough budget, and the ZIP code. That is enough for a firm all in number inside twenty four hours, with the fall heights and use zones laid out so a licensor can read it. If you are running a licensed center, the daycare playground equipment page covers the inspection side in detail.
