Playground Grants for Daycares and Child Care Centers

The short version

Daycare playground grants come from state child care agencies, manufacturer matches, shade grants and local funders. Here is how each works and what to have ready.

Daycares and child care centers fund playgrounds with a mix of state child care grants, manufacturer matching programs, shade grants and local funders. There is no single national daycare playground grant, so the first step is to find out what your state child care agency offers and whether your program is licensed, nonprofit or for-profit, because that decides which programs you can apply to.

Key facts

  • State child care agencies run most of the grants that reach daycares, and each state sets its own rules, amounts and dates.
  • Some state programs name playgrounds. Oklahoma's Outdoor Learning Environment grants funded construction or refurbishment of outdoor play spaces at 27 licensed child care programs in 2024.
  • Others fund facility improvements but do not mention playgrounds. Washington's Needs-Based Grant, for example, allows minor renovations and environmental improvements at $1,000 per award, so ask the agency whether outdoor play equipment qualifies.
  • GameTime's Community Champions Playground Grant is open to nonprofits, youth organizations and community groups. The 2026 deadline is October 23.

What grants can a daycare apply for?

State child care grants

Start with your state's child care licensing or early learning agency and ask which grants are open to licensed providers. Two examples show how different they are. Oklahoma's Outdoor Learning Environment grants went to 15 child care centers and 12 family child care homes in 2024, with $2.25 million in total funding for building or refurbishing outdoor learning environments. Washington's Child Care Complex Needs Fund covers facility improvements to meet ADA accessibility requirements, with awards of $5,000 to $50,000 for licensed providers, though its 2025 to 2026 round is closed and its page does not mention playgrounds. Rounds open and close, so call the agency before you plan around any of them.

GameTime Community Champions Playground Grant

Nonprofit daycares and child care programs run by youth organizations and community groups can apply. It is a matching purchase program: up to 100 percent on play systems over $75,000 list price, up to 80 percent from $25,000 to $75,000, and up to 65 percent on credit terms. It funds that manufacturer's equipment only, freight and tax are extra, and it cannot be combined with other offers. Applications are due October 23, and orders by October 30. For-profit centers should confirm eligibility before applying.

Shade structure grants

The American Academy of Dermatology's shade structure grant gives up to $8,000 for permanent shade over outdoor play areas. Its program summary lists day-cares among the places it supports, while its eligibility text names public schools and nonprofit organizations, so confirm that your center qualifies. You also need a sun-safety program that has been running for at least a year. The 2026 window runs October 19 to December 18.

Local funders and parent groups

Community foundations, civic clubs, local businesses and parent fundraisers close the gap after a larger award. A church or nonprofit that hosts your center can also apply as the sponsor. See the guide to playground grants for nonprofits and grants and funding for church playgrounds.

What do you need before you apply?

Item Why it matters
Current child care license State programs require a license in good standing
Itemized quote Equipment, freight, surfacing and installation on separate lines
Site plan with use zones Shows the equipment fits and the accessible route is planned
Ages served Funders and licensing want equipment sized for the children who use it
Proof of match Pledges, committed funds or a fundraising plan
Maintenance plan Who inspects the playground and how often

How do you budget the whole project?

Grants rarely cover everything, and licensing inspectors look at the whole play area, not just the equipment. Price the full project first, including surfacing, border and installation. The 2026 Playground Equipment Price Index gives equipment prices, and how much a commercial playground costs covers the rest. For equipment sized for young children, browse toddler playground equipment and see our daycare playground equipment page.

Where to go next

Schools should read grants for playground equipment for schools, and every other project type starts with the playground grants guide. When you are ready for the itemized number an application needs, request a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What grants are available for a daycare playground?

State child care grants, manufacturer matching programs such as GameTime's Community Champions grant, shade structure grants and local foundation or civic club funding. Most centers combine more than one source.

Can a for-profit daycare get a playground grant?

Some state child care grants are open to licensed for-profit providers, while many private programs favor nonprofits. Check each program's eligibility rules before you build the budget.

Do daycare grants cover surfacing and installation?

It depends on the program. Some manufacturer programs match equipment only, with freight and tax extra, so budget surfacing, border and installation separately unless the funder says otherwise.

Does a daycare playground need to meet licensing rules?

Yes. State licensing rules apply to outdoor play areas, so check your state's requirements for equipment, surfacing and fencing before you buy, and keep the paperwork with your application.

How do you find child care grants in your state?

Call your state's child care licensing or early learning agency, then check your county or regional community foundation. Ask which rounds are open now, who is eligible and whether outdoor play equipment is an allowed cost.

How early should a daycare start a grant application?

Start months ahead. Rounds open and close on fixed dates, and every application needs a quote, a site plan and proof of match. Get the itemized quote first.

Send the dimensions, the age ranges and the ZIP code. You get one firm all-in proposal covering equipment, freight, surfacing and installation, written to be read by people who were not in the meeting.

A quote costs nothing and commits you to nothing. If you are early and just need a credible number for a grant application, that is a perfectly good reason to ask.
